Calne's better known industry was Harris Pork manufacturing plant that dominated a town architecturally & provided employment directly & indirectly to numbers of of a residents until the early 1980s - at its closure in 1983 for example it employed across 2,000 people away from the town population of 10,000. These are said that a pork curing industry developed because pigs reared within Ireland were landed at Bristol and then herded to London through Calne. A mill began inside the 2nd half of the 18th century after brothers John & Henry Harris began businesses which joined together in 1888 as C. & T. Harris & Co. the manufactory hwhen currently been fully demolished & a front yard in which it used to be placed redeveloped as shops, housing & a library.
