Calne occurs as town in Wiltshire, England. It lies on the River Marden, the Wilts and Berks Canal and the A4 road about 25 miles east of Bath or 95 miles West of London. These are a microscopic (though expanding) town by using the people of 13,606 based on data from the 2001 Census. Calne's better known industry was Harris Pork manufacturing plant that dominated a town architecturally & provided employment directly & indirectly to numbers of of a residents until the early 1980s - at its closure in 1983 for example it employed across 2,000 people away from the town population of 10,000. These are said that a pork curing industry developed because pigs reared within Ireland were landed at Bristol and then herded to London through Calne. A mill began inside the 2nd half of the 18th century after brothers John & Henry Harris began businesses which joined together in 1888 as C. & T. Harris & Co. the manufactory hwhen currently been fully demolished & a front yard in which it used to be placed redeveloped as shops, housing & a library. Following of the closure of the manufactory unemployment in the town increased and for great deal of the Eighties Calne suffered several of the problems extra commonly associated by using big cities.

Calne railroad station opened within 1863 on a branch line from Chippenham but the station was closed following of Beeching Axe in 1965.

A united states estate of Bowood House lies near Calne. It was on this text that Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774; there is a plaque in the town centre commemorating this.
